Maja A. Chris
The Netherlands

Maja A. Chris lives and works in Amsterdam, one of the cities that inspire her the most. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, as well as in Conservation and Restoration, a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, and a PhD in Art History.

Maja has a diverse professional background that spans higher education, teaching, and research, alongside her artistic practice. She actively exhibits her paintings and prints internationally and has extensive experience organizing and curating art projects and exhibitions.

The city is a recurring theme in her artistic research. Rather than replicating reality, her cityscapes reflect it - transformed through her sensibility, color palette, vision, and emotions. By engaging with urban space and time, Maja captures the infinite discoveries a city offers. Her work highlights the beauty within the visual world, creating new and uplifting representations of life.

She works with acrylics and oils on canvas, birch panels, and paper, while also incorporating colored pencils, graphite, and pastels. Her creative process includes drawing, monotype, and the layering and subtracting of paint to build depth and complexity. Nature serves as a key inspiration for her color choices. As a printmaker, she specializes in multicolored linocuts, monotypes, and artist’s books.

Maja is a Board Member of the Grafein Foundation in the Netherlands and actively contributes as an art curator and project organizer for numerous exhibitions and artistic initiatives. She is currently co-organizing the National Printmaking Triennial, Grafiek2025, which will take place in the Netherlands in autumn 2025.

Her work has been showcased in ten solo and duo exhibitions and over seventy collective exhibitions. She has received three awards, and her artworks are part of numerous public and private collections worldwide.
